The Name Korčula
There is a story about the name of this island. Korčula’s Greek name is Korkyra Melaina (lat. Corcyra Nigra). The name Korkyra is tied to the legend of the beautiful nymph Kerkyra, daughter of Asop, God of Rivers. Poseidon, the God of the Sea, fell in love with her, kidnapped her and held her in captivity on the island.
The name Korčula is shared with the Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. Ephitet black (melaina) comes from the dense holm oakwood which appears black when seen from the sea.
